On February 23rd, 2019, we had our very first Coldest Night of the Year walkathon, and it was a great success! 130 amazing people in 26 teams helped us in raising awareness about homelessness, as well as in surpassing our original $20K fundraising goal – Between walkers, and those who generously sponsored them, together we raised $35,000! All that will help our Centre’s programs and services, to continue supporting some of the most vulnerable members of our community.
Participants gathered in the garden of the St. Felix House, and after a brief welcome message from our Executive Director, Brian Harris, we all started the walk from our 25 Augusta Ave site to our 69 Fraser Ave locations, and back. The walk was full of smiles and positive energy – Adults, children, corporate and community groups, staff, all came to walk with us to share their compassion and kindness for those experiencing homelessness, extreme poverty, housing insecurity, and financial instability. The event finished with a small celebration, sharing some chilli and a delicious hot chocolate.
We would like to thank all the Official Sponsors of our Coldest Night of the Year 2019 for their amazing support: Felician Sisters Inc., Cossette, Vision7 International, and McDonald’s Canada. We would also like to recognize the support of School Resto and Liberty Commons for our rest-stops at Liberty Village. A big THANK YOU to the many incredible volunteers who helped us setting up before the event; those who welcomed the walkers; the registration team and route marshals; and those preparing and serving the chili to celebrate – We couldn’t have done it without you!
A special thank-you to Niall Collins, who volunteered his time and talent as the official photographer for the event. And finally, we would also like to thank Beanfield Metroconnect and PUNCH Canada Inc. for helping us to promote the walk, and to Gifts for the Homeless Inc for the care kits we were able to distribute to people in need along the route.
A big heartfelt THANK-YOU again from all us at St. Felix Centre to all those who participated. We hope you keep our guests close to your heart and we look forward to seeing all of you next year, on February 22nd, participating in the Coldest Night of the Year 2020! Save the Date!!
